SPECIAL NEEDS BIKE TRAILER HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Adjustable 5-point safety harness: A person sits comfortably in a padded sling seat with an adjustable 5-point safety harness.
  • Wheel size options: You choose between 700c (road) or 26″ (mountain bike) quick-release full size bicycle wheels and tires. 700c wheels roll more easily. 26-inch wheels deliver more comfort. (Puncture resistant tires available.)

  • Highly visible: Other road and bike trail users see you and your passenger. We use bright blue, yellow, and black water-resistant Cordura fabric with extra reflective highlights and include a safety flag, wheel reflectors and rear reflector.
  • Reinforced floor: Added strength allows passenger to step inside.
  • Hitch and tow bar options: Your choice of hitch and tow bar. Attach to your seat post or down low at the rear axle.
  • Quick-release roll bars: Easily access the trailer. Also includes break-away front roll bar top for easy access.
  • 3-wheeled jogger: Our jogger option lets you remove the tow bar and add a front wheel and a push handle.

INCREASE SAFETY WITH AUTOMATIC TRAILER BRAKES

Towing a larger passenger means more power and distance needed to slow down. When you depend only on your bike's brakes to slow you and the trailer down, you sacrifice safety.

Automatic trailer brakes simply make sense

For 40 years, we've made sturdy, reliable and safe bike trailers. We know, allowing a rider to reduce their speed more uniformly, makes for a safer and stable ride, so we added trailer brakes. These are especially important when towing heavy loads at higher speeds and for emergency stopping.

How they work

Our wheels use Sturmey Archer hubs that have the brakes built into them. The bike rider doesn't do anything. The nose of the tow bar has a spring mechanism and an actuator. As the special needs bike trailer pushes into the bicycle, the actuator pulls the brake cables which slows down the trailer. This happens automatically. No levers are attached to the bicycle handlebars. (Please note, these are not quick-release wheels.  You need to remove them with a wrench and screwdriver.)

DECIDING ON YOUR HITCH

We offer two hitch options.

Seatpost Hitch

The seatpost hitch allows the bike and trailer to move independently of the trailer, and, in the event of a bicycle crash, the trailer stays upright. The seatpost hitch does not effect handling.

Watch this quick video about tipping when a CycleTote trailer is attached to the seatpost:

Axle Hitch

The axle hitch connects to the rear wheel of the bicycle using a quick-release system. When you want a hitch that's simple to install and remove, and one that doesn't attach to your seatpost, choose an axle hitch.

DETERMINING HITCH SIZE FOR SEATPOST MOUNT

Seatposts come in a variety of sizes. If you've decided on a seatpost hitch, you'll need to determine the seatpost size or the hitch won't fit properly. To do this,

  • Loosen your bicycle seat post and pull it up and off of the bicycle.
  • Look near the bottom of the seatpost. A metric measurement should be stamped near the bottom of the post.
  • For seatposts without the stamped size, measure the exterior diameter (from outside to outside across the middle) using a metric caliper.

If you need help, your local bike shop should be able do this for free or for a minimal charge. Accuracy is important as sizes sometimes vary by millimeters. Please call if you need more help.
